guys,
Im trying to turn over a discovery that we have had in at work.
Its got no keys and we have had the back off the barrell and still no life.
I have shorted across the 2 big terminals on the starter solonoid and it makes the starter 'whizz' but it does not engage.
Do i need +12v at the small spade terminal connectiopn aswell?
Is that an ignitipon switched live that allows the starter to engage?
Cheers
Col
you only need a 12 supply to the spade terminal, that is the solenoid and it does the high current switching, it also moves the pinion
forward and doing what you are, your just bypassing that so it will not engage and the starter just spins away without turning the engine

It was a tongue in cheek reposte about the somewhat agricultural traits of some of the Landrover lineage! I didn't realise they had progressed past the inertia type starter.
My disco did something similar to this - refusing to start with the key after wet weather.
Ignition came on but no starter.
In the end I ran a new piece of wire frm the starter relay (passenger side kick panel) through the bulkhead and onto the starter solenoid.
Never failed since - until the cambelt broke!
