how can i test a fuel gauge when it is not in the car and also the fuel tank sender when it is not wired up many thanks

To test the sender draw two lines on a piece of card equal to the depth of the tank and place the sender on the top line as if fitted to the tank

Temp wire up the sender and gauge to a suitable supply and with the arm of the sender on the bottom line depicting the bottom of the tank check the gauge read empty then move the arm up towards the top line and check that the gauge moves to full.

Take care with the length of the sender arm that it won't foul any baffles etc inside the tank.

Connect one wire from the sender it to a car battery (24v’s even better) and the other wire to a 'friends' mouth, when he screams then the sender is working and that was the full side

Mr Whippy I'm suprised you didn't have some humourous observation about me dishing out advice on electrical matters

well considering how many questions you've asked in the past you should be an expert by now...
