I need to dismantle my old smiths gauges (dolomite vintage) to fit some leds inside for back lighting. Anyone know how to do this as non destructively as possible. Took a look and wasn't entirely sure where to start.

Won't the LED's fit where the bulb goes? and come to that why not just use the bulbs?

The original buld holders are knackered. The green filters have all but melted away. I have tried to fit leds where the bulbs once fitted but they do not produce light in the same way a bulb does (bulb = light in all directions, led = tends to be from the from of the led only). Thought if I mounted a few inside the gauges I would a. get the required lighting and b. probably never have to change the leds (unlike bulbs).

Look behind the rim and you will see a number of bent over tags securing it . Lever them up just slightly and you will then be able to rotate the rim until it comes off. then remove the screws conecting the innards.

ta, just be careful not to break the clips (I didn't)

sVc tooled up for 2" bezels last year & we also buy in 3 1/2 & 4" ones.

Sounds good what do dimensions do you need ? presumably just the inside diameter of the hole where the bulb holder once went. Length of the rod would not be an issue as there is nothing behind the gauges to foul on anyway.
