Locost fan switch?
tegwin - 24/2/09 at 11:11 PM

I have been trying to order some bits and pieces for the TVR.. added a nice aluminium housing to my basket along with an adjustable thermocouple type switch... comes to £45...

Now thats expensive for a fan switch...

Is there a lo-cost alternative? I wanted adjustable as im not sure what temperature I need the fan to kick in at....

This is the thermocouple device...

Could I just cabletie that to the radiator core rather than have to buy the expensive housing to allow it to sit in the water?

Any cheaper suppliers?

you shouldn't need an 'expensive housing' if that's the thermocouple you plan to use. it slips under the edge of a radiator hose and you get a rubber section with tapered sides and a slot in the centre to seal it.

that's how i've seen kenlowe senders plumbed in in the past anyway

For that much money you could trial and error a few OEM ones.

Golf one for my car was £8 IIRC.

^^^ wot they say.

you need that bulb to sit in water.

I have Kenlowe and one that looks identical to the one you show. The kenlowe (Land Rover) fits into a hose woth the thin rubber seal - not ideal but is hasn't leaked yet.

The other one (kit car) fits into radiator oppsosite the entry hose with the connector (opposite hose allows access to the rear - I never realised the bulb was that long!).

But I wouldn't bother with either of them.

Work out what temp you want your fan to kick in - there as swtiches in various temperatures using same fitting as well as switches with twin i.e. will sitch at 2 different temperatures to kick in 2 fnas, each at different tempereatures.

somewhere out there is a list of part numbers and tempeeratures.

see X-Eng (LR specialist parts) - there is stuff about this.

If you want adjustable temp, then a comparator circuit with a "standard" temp sender would do that (not sure about the hysteresis though), all done for less than a tenner.

With a fan switch what really matters is the temperature is the temperature at the raddiator outlet

http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=220003
the relay is only rated at 10 amps for controll a fan I would advise slaving a higger rated realy to it. relay

You might want to look at these which can be used with a relay --- I think Maplin also sell them

These look much neater and a bit cheaper Linky

Not adjustable but 90 to 80 seems pretty common.

that maplins kit is a comparator, as I said.

It works with a 1 K thermisitor that may be tricky to fit into a radiator but the components could be changed to work with a car temperature sender.

Are you feeling OK? That post's a bit garbled. Not your usual high standard.
