For my MK iNDY i bought an old westfield wiring loom, i 'm connecting all the switches relays etc.
Is it OK for SVA that my car's high beam only works, if the dip beam is on?
so, i can't flash them when the dip beam is off. ??
And will a normal toggle switch be good enough for the sva-man ( on - off)

Flash high beam not required.
On off ok for lights on, lights off. (thats assuming the toggle switch is in exempt area behind or within allowable area behind steering wheel).

Does the dip stay on when main beam is on. I have read of someone failing for this reason.

Seems a strange reson to fail....

I have a feeling our rover 400 that we used to have the low beam stayed on when the hi's were put on. Though of course I am probably wrong!

There was a post recently where someone failed for having dip and main beam on at the same time. I never new this was an issue, and had to re-wire my lights.

it would be quite easy to wire up anyway, just add a 'normally on'(?) relay to interupt the dip beam when the main beam is on. does seem like a stupid rule though!

That's good - ignoring the legal requirements, it really isn't a good idea to have the dip and main beams on at the same time... it's a bit hard on the battery and wiring, unless you make special provisions!

High beam alone = 2 x 65W / 12V = 10.8A
Both on = 2 x (65 + 45)W / 12V = 18A

(approximate maths! )

There's also the fact that the average headlamp bulb (e.g. H4) isn't designed to run both filaments at the same time.

When you flash your lights then you do get both filaments on together, but that's only for a second or two, unless you're a road-rage specialist...

Double element bulbs are not designed to be used with both filaments on.
The heat would soon destroy the bulb!

If you have separate dip/main lights then it is/was accepable for both to be on with main beam. As long as main beam shuts off when dip is selected.

Is there a proper lucas dip switch on a toggle type basis. I have the one which will do the side and dip ( with relay ), but there must be one that does the switch between dip and main in an almost instantaneous manner.
