Voltmeter Question
Dangle_kt - 6/5/09 at 07:42 PM

Hi,

Dumb question alert!

If the needle on a voltmeter installed on the dash is not moving at all, even with the engine running, during starting or anything - does it mean the voltmeter is broken or does it mean the altenator is dead and its a matter of time before the battery goes flat?

I think I'm right in thinking that if the battery is cranking the engine over, yet the meter still reads zero then the meter is goosed and the altentator etc is good?

Cheers

most likely a broken/loose connection to the voltmeter.

First place I'd look too

The volt meter should read around 11-12v when nothing is on, 13-14v when engine running and around 8-10v when cranking.

A cheap and cheerful multimeter from Maplins is a kit builder's friend... somewhere around £5 will get you something good enough to trace faults.
