Hi,

I am in the process of changing my indicators to LED's and was told that a motorcycle flasher relay would be best for this. I have bought one and on opening the package I find that there are only 2 wires, am I right in thinking that one goes to ignition feed and the other goes to the indicator switch and that the relay will get its earth through the bulbs?

If you are using LED's then there is not enough loading to make a std car flasher flash slowly enough to meet the SVA / IVA spec.

I think its either Premier wiring, or SVC do a flasher that is not load dependant.
I would use that. (Give them a ring and ask - try Premier first, as I think its them)

Or, you will have to fit resistive loads to the system to make up enough load to flash at the correct rate.
IF you make up resistive loads, make sure you have plenty of air around them (on on heat sinks in free air), as they get hot, and could cause a fire if wrapped in the loom or not well ventilated.

Best to get the right flasher unit and do the job correctly first time.

Last thing, if you use LED's then check your lights are working more often than with a normal car bulb, as the flash rate changes (usually faster) when one of the bulbs pop. This will NOT happen with a rate regulated flasher. So check the leds are working regularly, as you wont spot it when sitting in the car.

If you want to use a suitable bike one, I think you may still have the loading problem, but just at a different rate.
Easier to fit the right type of flasher in the first place., even if its more expensive.

Car builder soultions do an electronic flasher relay spefically for LED indicators or as has been said and as I have doine you can fit dropper resistors in paralell with your LED indicators.

We have a combination of LED's and Standard bulb's also with indicator buzzer...

What you need is a unit that can accomodate any load 1W to 100W without affecting the flash-rate. Search for a Motek/Acumen Mini Indicator Relay.

Typical Flasher Relays work ok - until you put the Hazards on. Which with a load of up to 100W it will struggle. It's two wires one in then another to the circuit. EASY!

This was the one we got - a bit pricey but idiot-proof!
