F**king loud horn
Ninehigh - 26/5/09 at 09:03 PM

Anyone used this company? I'm planning on fitting a couple of these horns too

http://www.top-gear.net/product.asp?u=22722N91253.9118517041&pnid=298&deptid=146

Unless anyone can come up with some louder ones for about the same price?

dave r - 26/5/09 at 09:09 PM

have you got compressed air on board then ?

Ninehigh - 26/5/09 at 09:10 PM

No, that was going to be the next question... Maybe I should visit the local truckstop see what they've got

MakeEverything - 26/5/09 at 09:13 PM

You dont need to store compressed air on board. They run off a small compresseor which spins up to feed the horns when you press the button.

Ninehigh - 26/5/09 at 09:14 PM

Yeah the link suggests they run by themselves.

Do you think 123db will make Mr TT crap his pants?

The same company should sell them

That one needs a compresor.

Get a Stabel Neutilus.

Yes, but not as thoroughly as he would when blasted by 139db (dunno what distance that's measured from though)

I've not had owt to do with 'em, but Stebel horns seem to get good write-ups.

ebay

JoelP - 26/5/09 at 09:18 PM

those must be bloody loud. The ones i have are triple air horns like these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=260381047109

which make you jump even when you expect it. These are a lot cheaper though and come with the compressor included!

Andi - 26/5/09 at 09:20 PM

Yeah I have this
http://www.top-gear.net/product.asp?lot=21&pnid=225&deptid=120

Just wire up and go and its pretty small, gets used on bikes a bit.
Cant resist doing it when the missus passes the front of the car, even though sometimes I know ill get the cold treatment all day

i was sure that 10dB doubled the volume, one link above says that 3dBs is a doubling. Correct or not?

Ninehigh - 26/5/09 at 09:25 PM

I think it's 3, I know that 90db is about as loud as someone shouting, and 140 is about as loud as a jet fighter taking off

adithorp - 26/5/09 at 09:35 PM

Nautilus is loud! Uncomfortably so.

It's not "excuse me"; More "MOVE YOU FECKING ARSE!"

adrian

Ninehigh - 26/5/09 at 09:38 PM

I don't want "MOVE YOU FECKING ARSE!"

I want "You've just made your trousers brown, put a dent in your roof and jerked the steering wheel so hard you've hit a tree. Where did that ship go?"

coozer - 26/5/09 at 09:53 PM

More train horns on the street HERE!

Confused but excited. - 26/5/09 at 10:07 PM

3db is correct.

JoelP - 27/5/09 at 06:53 AM

google implies that 3dB results from doubling the power, 6dB from doubling amplitude and that 10dB doubles the percieved volume.

Seeing as percieved volume is what counts when comparing horns, i shall go 'ner ner ne ner ner' as i walk out to work, and feel smug all day, til i go down in flames at tea time

I've got really loud air horns on my car - and I'm reluctant to use them as they just antagonise people.

You tend to get an "Aaaargh!...... you b*st*rd!!" reaction.

Just my 2p's worth.

Dangle_kt - 27/5/09 at 08:44 AM

I only use my horn about twice a year anyway. Be funny to have a beast.

It wouldn't work abroad though, they use horns like a polite warning to reversing cars and everything. Odd approach, but it seems to work!

I got round this problem with the bluebird by fitting extra long hoses going from the air horn compressor to the trumpets and leaving the standard electric horns still connected.

If I press it and then quickly let go, only the electric horn sounds as the compressor hasn't built up pressure yet in the long hoses to sound the air horns. But if I hold it on longer then all the horns sound after a seconds delay

This prevents accidentally annoying folk when I didn't want to blast there heads off

Vindi_andy - 27/5/09 at 09:59 AM

the other option is to wire in a delay relay into the compressor supply

Just a thought

All those Air fed VERY LOUD Horns require a substantial Air feed. Most are 100-120Psi.You will need a small reservoir tank and pressure cut off switch as well.
The 12/24Volts is usually the air solenoid valve coil voltage.

You will want large bore piping as the volume of air is a lot. You dont get a Lot of noise without a lot of energy behind it. Hence the big compressor and air pipes.

As said above they will upset more people than necessary.
A good set of loud electric horns are more than sufficient for most occasions.

Those Viair compressors are an excellent bit of kit. However, they are not cheap. Matt Savage land rovers do them in the UK.
I have a set of Truckstop's Train Horns.
They are very loud, and can be easily heard at the end of the village!
They are not fitted to the Viento!

As for those Db figures. Take it from me...

+3Db is DOUBLE
-3Db is HALF

+10Db is Ten Times
-10Db is divide by 10 times.

+10Db is NOT Double!

+20Db is 100 Times
-20Db is divice by 20 times

The DB's are a logarithmic unit that does not follow a straight line. (Any old person who used Log Tables at school - Before electronic calculators were invented) will know this.
They are purely a ratio.

As a DB is a ratio, any figures, even for sound for sound are calculated at a certain distance. Without a reference point, the figure is meaningless. ANY DB figure for anything will be relative to something.

Think of the exhaust noise level for the SVA / IVA.
Any sound level / figure is meaningless wouth a distance at which its measured.

joemotion - 27/5/09 at 06:36 PM

Will the nautilus horn go in as a direct replacement on the standard one i have? or will i need a compressor or anything?

Last time I used my horn I was taxi-ing. Now I want to antagonise the people who are trying to park in my boot or cut through me to get to the other lane... If I could get a horn that knocked them out for 5 mins I'd have one

Peteff - 27/5/09 at 10:04 PM

I have a klaxon which I used to have in my van and it really makes them sit up. The noise makes me laugh it's a sort of AAAh OOOO Gaaah

Yeah where did you get that from? I've seen some "old style" ones that sound similar but I take it yours is more air raid siren style..

Reminds me of Red Dwarf when Cat asks everyone to join him in a quick-step to the Awooga waltz

Peteff - 27/5/09 at 10:52 PM

A mate gave it to me years ago, they were fitted to the dumper trucks where he worked

This depends entirely on if you are refering to sound power or perceived sound levels.

A 3dB increase is a doubling of power, but it takes a 10dB increase to get a perceived doubling of volume because of the logarithmic response of the human ear.
