alternator light comes on
Scotty - 7/6/09 at 09:48 AM

hi guys
have a niggly little problem
while driving around the alternator light filickers, sometime stays lit for a time (eg 5 mins) have a volt meter in dash and this seems constant at 14v even with the light on solid
never a problem with the battery or starting the engine
any ideas what might cause this?

cheers in advance

I would always advise checking all connections right from each contact on the alternator through to battery + starter + earths.

Remember that the ignition light is usually connected to 12v on the battey side, and 13+ volts on the alternator side. If one side drops, the light comes on.

If if is coming on like that, I guess it could be the rectifier??

Alternator drive belt a bit slack, or oily/greasy?

I suspect faulty rectifier pack, keep an eye on your voltage becuse eventually it will either fall away and stop chargeing or start over chargeing and boil the battery/cook electric cables.

Its probably one diode in the rectifier packing up....
