Charge - help
makoto - 7/6/11 at 06:48 PM

Hi,

I seem to have an issue with my alternator charging. Thinking it was my alternator being the problem, I replaced it with reconditioned one, but I am still getting readings of 12.62 on the meter when I test the volts which should off cause be over 13.

Not sure what the problem might be.....any ideas please?

which type of alternator etc.?

Check there is power at the w/light wire with the ign on And that the warning light is illuminated. Also check that the bulb is 3 watt minimum and not an led.
If it has a seperate ign feed then check it has power there as well.

It is a 65amp alternator. The warning light does not come on and no power at the warning light wire?Might might be the cause?

Tested the bulbs and they are working fine

How is your charge light wired? It should be... +ve from ignition switch > charge light > alternator

Then that is your problem, the light should come on when you turn the ignition switch, and then go out when the alternator starts to charge. Check that the wire is connected to your ignition switch, and that it gets power when you turn it on. HTH Ray

Remove the small wire ( for the warning light) from the alternator and hold it to earth. Turn on the ign and it should light up ( the warning light). If not then your circuit has a problem. If it does light up the the alt has a problem. The alternator is earthed isn't it?? Not mounted on brackets with rubber bushings??

Just a quick update and further insight. My ignition and oil light is coming on now but does not to go out when the engine runs, which it should.
I am confused about this now.Does this indicate that the alternator is not charging? This is a recondition alternator I got 2 days ago?

or your wiring is incorrect. What have you done to make the lights work?

I've just put the wires to the way it was and it worked, but still nothing from the alternator
