hi all
Can anyone give me a shopping list to get started on making my own loom, i was going to use bullet connectors, soldered, but how much of which colour wire for a run of the mill '7' car.I was thinking of around 8 plain colours, no tracers.
Comments and suggestions please.

After you have added up everything, check out Premier Wiring for prices. You may find for a few extra quid you could get one ready made.

Just a thought.

You could buy a big reel of just one colour and use marker tags (you may need a small amount of higher current for alternator etc.) . A lot easier to build and cheaper but a tad more difficult for fault finding!

Methinks a rethink is in order.

My (partly made) loom consists of 42 colours and I havent sorted the ECU yet!

I agree, I think you probably need at least a dozen colours, plus some different sizes. Also I wouldn't solder bullets, you'd have an easier job with an uninsulated crimping tool and connectors and insulators.

from my LR experience and others, bullet connectors are old hat, bulky and not as reliable as the new fangled spade type; that is why you see spade type on modern cars. Spades are easier to buy and fit; you need a proper crimp tool for bullets (there are two type though) and they fit onto relays, fuse boxes atc.

Also to pull spade apart you grip the terminal itelf, with bullets you haveto pull on the wire and inevitably that leasd to the wire separating from the bullet if you are lucky, if you are unluck it does that but you don't realise it ending up with a bad connection that then can take ages to find!
