Indicating Hell!

Ok, guys I'm really stuck and SVA day is looming large! My left hand indicator circuit is not well! I've now burnt out about 20 fuses, blown 3 flasher relays, and been through 5 different indicator stalks and I'm stuck! Basicaly what happens is the right hand indicators work fine, hazards are OK but when the left ones are put on they flash, stop and then go pop. Seems like a simple short circuit and probably is but I don't know how to find it!? So far I've removed all the bulbs and disconnected the battery to continuity test each live though this brings up nothing....where as I was expecting to find one of them short circuiting against the chassis....Please, please, please someone knowledgable help shed some light.....I am so stuck and feel like giving up and burning the car! Help! Oli.

If the hazards work ok then it sounds to be a problem with the indicator switch to me.The hazards are using the same wiring apart from the actual indicator switch , have you a spare switch you can try?

The very last option would be to try and "blow it clear" using a big fuse and a fire extinguisher to hand.

As some on before has said if your hazzard lights work fine then your wiring is ok. If you disconect the plug off your indicator switch and use a short piece of wire to make the connection accross the live feed upto the switch and the feed down to the relay. This will make you indicator work with out the switch in circuit.

Nope, switchgear is fine. If you make a contact from live to side indicators seperatly directly without using the switch I get the same result with fuses blowing etc etc...I just can't understand where/why its short circuiting?! Bizarre, feel like I'm just whacking my head off a wall repeatedly at the moment with the car! Keep the ideas coming pls......Oli.

Hi, if you pull the large plug off the indicator stalks, look at the pins on the switch, you will see they are numbered 30,54,49, 49A,R & L,


follow wires 49 & 49A & make sure they go to the flasher unit , the flasher unit will be marked 49 & 49A,make sure they agree.


now check that wire in plug at pin 30 is live all the time, wire in plug at pin 54 is ign live,

wires in plug at pins R & L should be open circuit with no bulbs in & if you put bulbs in they should show a resistance roughly equal to Left or Right bulbs,
have you got a good earth at the back & they are not earthing out through the brake lights

come back when you have checked that

dont just remove the bulb when testing disconnect the light completely.
you may aswell run new wires to the left hand circut as youve had so much trouble.

just run one temp bulb from the stalk to test if everything else is ok

sounds like a short somewhere in your circut

mhh the problem deffo is in the switch to flasher unit zone!!

are you sure you burn up the bulbs?? can't imagine you do!!!

well i would just copy the right hand setup to the left side..and compare both routes..and search for differences...

No, no...not burning bulbs yet! Just been blowing fuses visciously and destroying flasher realys and indicator stalks! I've got the whol loom in bits now so I'm just going to run some new cables I think....it will probably save time trying to find a short in the long run! Cheers guys....Oli.
