Ignition Ballast wire
Chris Leonard - 6/5/03 at 12:48 PM

The ongoing rewiring........

On the escort MKII loom there is a pink Ballast wire that goes to the coil. It runs parallel with the yellow/back wire that also goes to the coil My understanding is that this reduces the voltage down to 9v.

My Question: does this need to be a specific length to do its job i.e. the length it is on the donor. Not much of a problem but its about 2 foot to long. I'd like to cut it down and rejoin it, if not I'll have to coil it up under the scuttle

Cheers Chris

It needs to be that long m8 to create the resistance. I would coil it, but beware of coiling as it will generate small amount of heat.

cut it out and replace it with a proper balast resitor next to the coil

a proper one - tell me more - available from all good stockists?

It looks like a porcelain fuse with a thin wire. Costs about £4. Got one in the shed somewhere.

any good motor factors should have one.
having run a mk2 rs2000 with the balast wire built in the loom and it fails miles from anywhere so replace it with a normal wire. result bunt out coil and points . . so replaced the lot with a luminition kit. best investment ever just fit and forget better idle, cleaner spark and no points bounce
