Paul (Notts) - 16/8/06 at 05:58 PM

Friend has a Ford Puma that has an occasional missfire in 3rd gear - any ideas

thanks Paul

( esp as I am thinking of buying the car )

Ford dealer told her something about a new coil unit but she cant remember what they said?

( prob only apparent in 3rd because thats the only time the engine is reved..)

check plugs 3 and 4.. the wasted spark system they use seems to encourage moisture damage that tracks down the plug leaving black lines visable on the ceramic part.. they are generally very reliable cars in my opinion, and dont really suffer from anything else

My zetec-s had the same fault. Ford updated the ecu. It was ok for a while then started again. 2 weeks later the coil pack went down. Never anymore trouble after that.

Coil packs are common the the zetec-s and IIRC are too on the puma.

What engine is it?? 1.7 with vvt??

if changing a coil pack it is important to change the plugs at the same time ---

Yep and use genuine fords aswell.

I had a problem in my zetec-s all the time i had it. It would cut out when i come to a junction occasionally. It had alsorts of things done by ford but it was still the same. When i last serviced it before i sold it i changed the plugs. I found it had NGK's in there. Replaced with ford ones and it was perfect. Why it caused it i do not know. and who put them in i do not know. I bought it 6months old with 4k on the clock so would never have had any need for any..
