convoluted tubing
jabbahutt - 1/9/06 at 06:32 PM

GRRRRRR!! just spent 45 minutes in the garage wrestling with the infernal stuff. I've tie wrapped my loom roughly into place and thought I'd have a go at fitting some of the pre split stuff to the rear portion of the loom.

For all that is good and holy, is there a technique or easy method for fitting this stuff?

Feel free to have a chuckle as I can see the funny side but any handy tips for saving your sanity using this stuff much appreciated.

Cheers

i found spiral wrap a lot easier to use

I never had any trouble fitting it.

However, I did pre-tape my wires together at 3" intervals.

Mine only took a few minutes! Used a tool for installing computer cables into split conduit , cost a few pence but can't remember where I got it

A decent pair of needlenose pliers can be used to push the tube open, just keep feeding the cables behind the pliers as you move them forward and you should be OK. Depending on your loom it may be easier to put a string through the tube and pull the wires through ignoring the split, I will be doing that for the front to back loom using non split flexible PVC conduit, its much cheaper than the split type if you buy from an electrical wholesaler, it is also easy to split, just run a stanley knife up it!

For fitting individual wires into the split conduit use a "spout" from a mastic gun , just insert one end and pull the spout along.

I use it all day at work and don't have any probs fitting it. The advice on the sealer gun spout is a good starting place though. You do find different qualities/wall thicknesses (sp) and you'd do well as said before to tape the wires every 100mm and tape the sleeving as well if you find individual wires are escaping. If your struggling to get everything in however you caould put on a double layer of sleeving with the splits diametrically (is that a real word) opposite each other.

I must have been doing something wrong too. My fingers were very sore after doing my loom with split conduit !
