Making some headway wireing up my Sierra column to the loom. I am having trouble with the mini wiper set up. I can only get it to run fast and slow. I can't get it to self park or run on intermitent.

If anyone can send me an idiots guide to solving the above, and also how to wire in relays, I'd be very pleeeeeeased!!

My old mini never had intermittent wipers and the self park was a bit hit and miss as well. The self park is operated by a switch in the wiper gearbox I think but the intermittent would most likely be part of the ford wiring loom on the sierra loom.

Totally forgot about the RHOcar. Managed to get the wipers working today, but couldn't get the intermittent going which ties in with what you said Pete. Fairly pleased with my non electric brain, as I've now wired up the steering column to the loom through days and days of trial and error. Still need advice on the relays though! Many thanks again.

the intermittent bit is formed by a little relay like box that plugs into a fuse box, or similar. On my car it was marked in german.

the haynes manual for the appropriate ford shows the wiring.

There are different types of relays for different applications. If you buy one from a motor factor,bubble wrapped or boxed, you will get a diagram with the pin numbers and connections on it or you could just read the packet and put it back. Relays are just switches to carry current to your appliance instead of the switch carrying heavy loadings and heating up.

I might not have made that clear.....its not actually a relay

The thingy im talking about is orange - a different colour from the 'relays'.


AFAIR

blue relays = 'normal' ones

red ones = 'normal ones' with a diode across the coil

black = high current ones.



Its not really a relay - its an electronic module with timing circuits - and most likely a relay as well - that takes the signal from the control stalk on the column and drives the motor.


its no relay, its a timer module, but it looks like a tall relay.

The Mini/Ford wiring connections and colour codes are on my site under Car Data.
I had problem with the wiper not always parking. This was due to the park wiping contact in gearbox having grease on it. Worth checking if you have any problems like that.
