On my Escort loom I have a 'spare' blue wire I've labelled 'solenoid'. It's not the start feed or the thick power
connection - what else connects to it???

what terminal has it got,if its a big ring then its a feed to summat,a lucar or coil type end and its for ballast start what you dont need.
It's a push fit jobbie - very skinny wire. There's a chance I may have labelled it wrong and it might be from the alternator (making it the
charge light?)

on my sierra loom there is indeed a blue wire and a blue/white wire from the altenator, one is indeed for the dash warning and the other goes to the
carb (choke i think.)
try it for fit on the alt, i suspect the alt must have a wire to the dash so if there are no others then that must be it!
loose wires seem to either sort themselves or not be needed!
again on a sierra the only wires near the starter are the solenoid one, the main feed and the earth, plus a couple of sensor wires above! good
luck...

some had a spare coming from the alternator to work the auto choke, ind wire for alternator will be in the multi plug

Problem solved. Found the loom extension for the alternator - it attaches to the starter's live feed and has a plug for the mystery blue wire.
Looks like it was the charge light after all
