fuel pump pickup

im making my own alloy fuel tank for my mid mounted reno 5. Its a complex shape and its deeper than the MG intank pump and sender. Can i just extend the pickup at the bottom of the pump with a seeled pipe so its a few mm off the bottom of the tank? Will it still be able to pick the petrol up. Its a large diameter which had a 'sock' clipped onto it, but i could add about 50mm of alloy tube to it and seal it somehow.

The return to the tank enters the top of the pump so i take it has an inbuild swirl pot.

comments please

Volvo used to bridge the gap between the in-tank pump and the outlet pipe by using a short length of composite fuel tubing secured/sealed at each end with fuel pipe clips.
Alt. you could swage out the end of an ali. extension pipe and cross cut it as (an exhaust pipe) then jubilee clip it tight to seal/secure.
Techies may disagree but I can't see any probs. with asking the pump to lift an extra 50mm.
