Im trying to decide which bike engine to use, and wanted to know if anyone knew of any problems with the bikes alternator not being man enough for the
job, and if not, any ways of getting around this.
Many thanks Jas Gray
The pre96 ST1100 has a puny 28A alternator (oil cooled) that has a habit of gradually failing. Fitting a post96 (with 40A alternator) is the cure.
There's also a slightly complicated retro fit of the 40A alternator onto the 28A spindle available....
Then again, I'm running a 28A alt and (so far!!!) no problems.... [fingers crossed]
You are thinking of this problem at the right time.
I know of a case of a GSXR1000 who runs an electric (Davies Craig) water pump, as it is dry-sumped.
All this works nicely. BUT at night with headlights on the alternator can't keep up.
I haven't heard of others who have had problems. Although I guess the people who need dry-sumps (and hence electric water pumps) are generally
the racers, who probably don't need lights.
I don't know of any good solutions when you run out of Amps. But LED rear lights save a few Watts, and re-using bike electrics can't be a
bad plan. Electrically heated windscreens are a bad plan.
