Does anyone know whether there exists any kind of fuel gauge sender unit that does not require a large hole to be drilled in the tank?
I'm thinking of a long, thin device that fits into the filler neck OR a non-contact/external level sensor....ideally(!) compatible with a Sierra
gauge, or with its own display such as a row of LEDs.
I have a standard MK Indy aluminium tank.
Food for though for any electronics whizzos!
i have seen RS sell fluid level sensors (petrol safe too) but these would need at least 1 12mm hole in the tank.
i plan to use 5 of them, each connected to an LED
still needs holes in the tank, but at least they're small ones!
or, minimalist, 1 sensor near the bottom of the tank that shows a led to show you got say, 1 gallon of fuel left?
I used the Sierra sender - it needs a biggish hole though, but is dead easy to fit
It also work well with my Acewell 3250.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions, guys.
That capacitance probe looks good, but pricey!
I may have to bite the bullet and stick a standard unit in.
Looking back at this thread, whitestu, how did you fit the sender?
Looking at the sierra one its a sort of "lipped disc" with 4 notches cut out. Did you have to make an adapter to fit a locost fuel tank?
I was thinking of what I would do for my MK fuel tank when it arrives.
