something like this should be ok.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Acumen-DG8-Digital-Gear-Indicator-BLUE-illumination_W0QQitemZ230307075368QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycle_Parts?hash=item2303070 75368&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

If its what your looking for. im pretty sure people have used them with R1 engines.

Yes. Takes a reading from the tacho and the speedo (assuming the speedo is electric) and "learns" the gears from there...

mm cool. just coz it says it works with 'most bikes' but i suppose it'll work with some mods to the wiring, rather than just simple plug and play like it would on a bike

The acumen unit guven by Chippy can be bought with a wiring harness to fit straight into the R1 loom - it's about £20 more for the loom, but it;s what I'll be doing to keep life nice and easy.

Or... for a locost option there's a PIC based gear indicator on my website... Works off the neutral light and microswitches on the gear stick....
