What battery to use?

I know this has been covered before but not for such a big engine.
I want to start on the wiring at the weekend and would like to test some of the electrics. What small battery could i get away with using?

(engine incase you dont know is a 3.6 Jag)

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

I use a odyssey pc680 to start a 18:1 compression 2.0 diesel - they have a lot of poke for a small battery.

you could always try a varley red top. i had one on my 200sx, and it worked great. i had a red top 25, which i think had 625 cranking amps, which was more than the standard fit big battery. You could even hear that the starter motor was cranking the engine faster with this battery. not cheap though. cost about £90 about 4 years ago. dont think they are much cheaper now

Just for testing etc I got a battery from the scrapyard for a tenner. Worked fine ^_^ and happily turned over my straight six (easier with air con, power steering, alternator not connected etc)

good question though. how do you work out what size battery you need? i'm not really wanting to spend big money on a Gel battery, normal one would do me, but how do i know what cranking amps i need?
