Oops blew coolant temp in two HELP

I noticed temp gauge wasn't working on my recent purchase, 1300 xflow, traced wire from temp sensor and it wasn't plugged to clock, so I tried to plug it back in and then boom from under my bonnet, it has exploded the temp sensor, so before I fit my new one any advise to where the wire goes? its single wire and must earth through block, the gauge has fuel(working) temp (inop) voltage(working)

Thanks in advance

What gauge, old 'smiths' Style?

If so the wire from the sensor goes to the gauge, it has a bi-metallic strip, then to a voltage regulator then to the battery.

If the car is not fitted with a voltage regulator then the gauges will read high fluctuating with battery voltage, if the gauge is short circuit then you will be putting a battery straight onto the sensor and blow it up.

If you brush the sensor wire against earth you should see gauge moving, do not hold for long or the heating element will burn out.

Regards Mark
