st150 starter motor problem

Bought an st starter a few months ago and my flywheel arrived yesterday so decided to chuck it together and spin the engine over.

Jump leads from the roadster and the motor spun up but not with much gusto- expected it to leap across the floor but it just sat there and whirred.

Popped it on the engine and the gear shoots out, engages with the flywheel but then just clicks and doesnt even try to turn the engine. Engine turns freely with a spanner so I am guessing the starter is knackered?? Any thoughts or ideas?

Starter will work in two phases, 1st will throw it into gear and the current to drive the motor is shunted so spins without power to help engage, as the solenoid hits the end of its travel it operates a second switch which bypasses the shunt and applies full load.

On the garage floor it should leap, remove the solenoid and make sure it's got full movement and the lump of metal slams back and operates the switch, if you apply full power to the motor itself and it's feeble then probably needs looking at.

Thanks Mark

I was expecting a kick and never got one. Tried applying power direct to the motor terminal and still no kick just a whizz around without much gusto - looks like it's dead ;(
