alternator query

Continuing with the wiring, and have reached the alternator ! I have read enough of the past threads to know that the big B+ goes to the battery, the smaller D+ goes to the dash then on to ign +, but there is another terminal marked with 4no 'M's (or 'W's depending on which way you look at them?) around the base of the terminal, does anyone know what this is for? and does it need to be connected to anything?.
There is no identification on the alternator so I cant check up, but was told by the kind soul who donated it, that it was off a cvh sierra, (there isn't the normal multi-plug on the back, it just has the 3 screw on terminals?
Any help on the unknown terminal would be appreciated, before I vanish in a flash of blue light !!
(my insurance is up to date!!, but the wife says she's not going to share it with me !!, and I'd hate her to enjoy herself at my expense!!)
Many thanks
Mick

Well, if its internally regulated all you need is the B+ (battery) and the IGN for the field. The other is for the guage. Is it possible that the other plug is for an external voltage regulator?
