Erratic Temperature Gauge

Last night I fired up the Indy, after it's winter hibernation and went down the pub to meet the NE7ER's. Checked the oil and water levels were OK before I set off, and the battery was full of electricity.

On the way home the temp gauge was acting irratically.

Usually it goes from cold up to 80C, occasionally 90 or 100 in traffic or on the track.

Last night it went from cold to 80, then to 70 then to 110 then to 120, then back to 70. It did this for about 5 minutes and then went full deflection off the scale at 130C for the rest of the journey home. No signs of obvious overheat (steam, leaks etc) and the fan didn't come on automatically (but I did use the override switch just in case).

Wondering what could cause this?

Loose wire somewhere?
Damaged sender from winter storage?
Air lock near sender (it's at the top of the thermostat)?
Knackered water pump?

Mike

After a period of hibernation I would first look at an airlock.

just corrosion, wiggle the connections

an airlock usually make the temp drop like a stone and the heater go dead if it's running normally then no real prob

dunno but how quickly did it change?

a repsonse of about 1 second = very quickly would indicate electical fault.

Check the obvious first, corosion on the conections, check a good earth to the block for the sender.
Don't forget to look at the oil temp and oil presure.
If the water temp is eratic and the oil temp is fairly constant then it is the water temp sender or guage.

If oil temp rises and oil presure drops then you have a serious heat problem
