switches 2 position, 3 pole

My rocker switches for hazards, fan etc have 3 poles on the back. Why 3 and not 2? Should I run the power to them in series?

3 pole switches are generally (be aware i suck at electrics!)
12v power to the common (middle?) pole.
This is then fed to pole 2 when the switch is in the off position (not every switch need to be turned on for it to be powering something) OR fed to pole 3 when it's switched on, like you'd expect from a switch.
something l;ike that anyway
