wiring colour codes?
for those who have done their own looms, have you followed any particular standards, or made your own up?
i'm looking at lists of colour codes, thinking theres a LOT of different colours, eg one colour to a swtich, different colour out the switch to
what ever it controls.
i'm think of simplifying mine, but just wondered if anyone else has done this, and would it make it more complicated?

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

so did you just use like 1 colour for everything to do with your brake lights, and everything to do with indicators for example?

When I rewired one of my bikes a few years ago I found a 50m roll of red wire lurking in a dark corner of the garage - so I used that..
Needless to say, I regreted that one..
On my Saab loom I've recently made I tried to keep some sort of system to it, if I had a blue wire getting split into more than 1 direction I
used blue wire with tracers, etc. made it easier later on to work out which wire originated from where.

Same here basically. I used cable salvaged from a couple of old car looms, and occasionally ended up using similar colours to the original looms e.g.
white for main beam, yellow for dipped etc. If I had enough cable in the right colour I did try to keep a theme going for a particular circuit (keep
the same base colour but have a red/black stripe for the 12v supply for example), I did make sure that plain red cable was only used for permanent
12v, black is switched 12v, and brown is earth.
My main aim was to make sure there weren't two similarly coloured cables in any one section of the loom. And keep records of where everything
goes

I made my own.
I used as many colours as I could salvaged from a mondeo loom and made a key aswell as putting notes on the ends of the loom.
very cheap and easy

To save buying 14 miles of different coloured wire, as I want to make my own loom, I was thinking of using one colour and numbering the ends.
Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

just buy different colours by the meter - you wont need that much - probably more of red and more of black for 12v + and 12v -
use a striped wire for a switched live - earths can be - black, black/white
as long as you dont use one colour which will require trace checking to find anything - i did that on the dax - maybe it wasnt the best idea but never
really had a problem if you do it right
i have just about finished the diagram for the busa using microsoft excel (2003) dont use the latest one its not that good - i can draw the car parts
and wires with infinite colours and stripes very easily in that program - if anyone wants a copy let me know (westfield wiring codes - to suzuki) lol
- thats the other prob using two different codes as in the factory built one i have - i wanted to work out what was what - now i have done that i feel
very much confident what is going on under there - its not that straight forward to look at but if as in any wiring you break it down into small
simple steps and keep a clear record its a breeze
