Rev counter gets to 9000RPM then switches off

Ive got a Smiths Motorsport range rev counter fitted in the car. Its worked fine with the last engine but now i have upgraded to a ZX12R bike engine and reset it so it reads the correct amount of pulses per crank rev it wont go over 9000RPM. It should go to 12000 but just seems to go to 9000 then drop down to 0 and only returns when the revs drop below that point.

To me this sounds like the device cant take the input signal from the engine and is switching off because of overload.

What can i do? i cant find the specs for the rev counter off the CAI website because useally the more cylinders a rev counter reads the lower its upper limit is (or in my case signal pulses per rev).

Any thoughts welcome.

Preumably if it's connected to the crank sensor your getting a lot of pulses per revolution (depending on the number of teeth on the trigger wheel) and the frequency is going above the max you tacho can handle.

Could you connect it to the coil negative terminal instead (like most raditional tachos) which will only give you 1 or 2 pulses per revolution?

its using the ecu output so only a few signals per rev. The old engine was outputting half the amount of pulses so i had to alter the tacho's settings for lost spark. Maybe this meant i now do indeed have to many signals that the rev counter can handle. The instructions dont help either.

Have you tried ringing their technical department? They were very helpful when I bought a second hand but never used speedo that was broken inside. they fixed it for free, no problem. They will probably have an answer for you.
