In Tank Fuel Pump and Sender

I'm sure this will have been discussed before but I have a digital dash that has a 0 - 15V input for the fuel level reading. I have a tube style (porsche 944) tank sender and a Subaru impreza in tank fuel pump. The problem is that I have to use a resistor network to get the 0 > ? voltage for the dash which means that I could be sinking about 250 mA through the sender sitting in some nice petrol. Is this normal? or am I doing something wrong? The Fuel pump has a 12V connection sitting in the fuel with a capacitor strapped to it which also sems a bit of a concern. Any thoughts would be greatfully received?

thanks
Dave B
