Battery Location - Poll

I know this was discussed yesterday but i also need to know.
Although my tintop has the battery in the boot, i am still a bit undecided where to put it in the locost.

ps bear in mind i may need to use a rather large battery so option 3 may look a bit strange is the seat is quite far forward.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

I'd put all the "workings" of the car in the engine bay, its the most sensible place. I'd also keep it as low as possible for the lowest CofG. That said, if your car is front heavy, somewhere at the back would be good. Make it accessible though. You never know when you might need to charge it. Especially in an open car where some joker may put your side lights and indicators on when you're not there.

Electrically, the best place is near the starter motor. Keep the high current cables as short as you can.

as mentioned in the other topic today, nothing wrong with putting it in the boot, as long as there's no risk of it touching the tank, or petol fumes being about in case of a battery lead coming loose and causing a spark, so watch you tank vent tube.

if there's no room with the engine, the boot is fine, but footwell is maybe your best

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

footwell is best IMHO, its low down, near the engine, opposite you to balance weight a bit, and not far from the centre of the car for the moment of inertia.

And i cant think of ANY good reasons not to put it there!

Increasing the weight over the front wheels (although not too much)

I'd vote for "where it fits" preferably engine bay.

What tintop have you got with a battery in the boot?

Passenger footwell is a good few feet behind the front wheel! More if you put it under the passangers knees! Assuming a locost is often 50/50 anyway, close to the middle is good!

For a larger than average battery, id say sacrifice your boot space for the bigger battery, but segregate it from the fuel tank area.
Youll need some big trirated cable for the starter though to cater for the distance. Youll need to go up one size, and enclose it to protect it i would say.

Kindest Regards,
Richard.

Mine is snug in the passenger footwell behind a velcro'd on panel. Keeps the engine bay nice and neat.

The other advantage I found was using the donor cabling totally unmodified. Still wrapped as it came off the Sierra.

This pic shows it in place but not secured....

Mini's, some BMW's and many older classic cars.

Mazda MX-5's used to have the battery in the boot. Not sure about the current model though.
