negative battery lead

can the negative battery lead be braided and un insulated? or does it need to be insulated black? cheers.
vehicle wiring products supply a 19mm squared braided wire with battery clamp on one end and ring terminal on the other!

I think it can be either, but I would always use insulated.

Tape, sleeve, anything - just yellow
