Air temperature Sensor Location

Hi All,

Hope you are all ready for Santa arriving.

I am just about to start wiring up my Megasquirt loom and was planning to mount the air temp sensor inside the air filter -Piper cross sausage type, I've just read on the internet that this is not the best position because they can suffer from 'Heat Stroke' and they should just measure ambient air temperature.

So the question is what have you guys done and where have you mounted them?

Mine is stuck in the plenum, its got a turbo so has to be after the intercooler.

It just has to measure the heat of the air entering the TB's most new cars have the sensor combined with the MAF.

Where you propose sounds fine to me, to best effect you need to duct cold air from in front of the rad so it then goes in the ducting.

I would have thought the filter would be ideal as it will measure the heat soak as after all that's the air the engine is going to use

Mounted between second and third throttle body as thats where the air is the engines breathing....

It should measure the temp of the air entering the ports. Here we must define whether we're talking about air heat soak or sensor heat soak. My sensor has to be mounted in the manifold after the throttle because it's turbocharged, the problem with that is it's a metal manifold, a metal sensor, sat in a very large chunk of metal at the top of a VERY hot engine bay. Even when cruising along at 60 it can read ~55c intake temps because the sensor got heat-soaked at the last set of lights. There's a general upward trend in air temp during a drive. This doesn't change if I change my intake, intercooling, remove the filter etc - which suggests it's primarly sensor soak. If you're not turbocharged it doesn't actually matter too much unless your intake is long and gets very warm.

mine is also mounted on a aluminium block fixed to the filter back plate, it does suffer from sensor heat soak, and Dave Walker commented on it when he mapped it, but still maped it ok and been no issues. think its a bit of a compromise as cant see any where realistically it can go if running a sausage filter unless fixed just within the engine bay near filter
