Cracked alternator case.

Just making up the brackets for my blacktop zetec and the alternator and I have found that the alternator has a slight hairline crack in it running across the casing.

Before I get a new one I imagine it was like this for a long time in the Focus/mondeo it used to reside in.

Should I just get a new one or is it worth seeing if it works ok for a while??

Assuming ( Yes I know) that this is a the blacktop alternator ? its not the best choice for a 7. Its going to be at least 100A and as much as twice the capacity you will need and second is the alternator is ecu controlled for emissions purposes. Fords smart charge system. Now it will self excite and charge but combined with the damage I would look for a smaller more basic alternator.

Not a hard thing to replace in situ, I would carry on and just replace if and when it fails.

Edit - obviously wasa's comments may be more prudent to follow.

Ah.... I didn't realise that it was anything other than just a normal alternator. Does that mean that it won't be regulated properly?

I have a smaller k series alternator I could use but it means changing the nice bracket I have just fabricated.
