Megajolt - Best Donors For Parts + Questions
My engine is a 2.0 pinto and will be running R1 bike carbs from Bogg Bros (One Day!), ignition controlled with a Megajolt.
1) I want to get the Megajolt parts sourced, what is the best Ford donor to get these parts from?
- EDIS4
- Coil Pack
- VR Sensor
- TPS
2) A general question. While looking for a megajolt unit I saw one advertised as being configured for MAP but could also be supplied configured for
TPS. what is the difference?
3) Looking at this site "http://www.cate1.co.uk/megajolt/" it appears that a megajolt receives inputs from the VR Sensor and also the TPS
and this provides the ability to 3D map.
Can the Megajolt just take an input from the VR sensor to 2D map.
4) For R1 carbs is it easy enough to fit a TPS from any donor?
5) Do you know any good reference material for fitting a megajolt on the above setup, or is there anyone out there who has done all this?
6) I am getting a premier wiring loom for use with the above, is this a sensible choice?
Sorry for all of the questions, I just want to make sure I am going down the right line.

MegaSquirt is better than MegaJolt IMHO.
1) EDIS any early Zetec - you'll find it in the engine bay on the passenger side normally (escorts etc)
2) MAP is done via Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) and the other by Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) - Map is generally considered the better one, but
can be tricky with Bike TB's - there's a Hybrid version especially for TB's - using a MEGASQUIRT though (not sure if MegaJolt can do
it)
3) Same idea as MegaSquirt
4) not sure - I have Gixer TB's
5) EDIS site somewhere can't remember link
6) Premier wiring loom won't cover this - You'll need a SPECIFIC engine loom!

If you believe you're not crazy, whilst everybody is telling you, you are - then they are definitely wrong!

Why Bogg bros conversion???? Do you get more pocket money than me? Just wait till Deneo sorts out his manifold........
For magajolt i bought the ECU with integrated Edis4 unit off Zilspeed. Less wiring, nice and clean.
http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=39852
i got crank sensor off 1800 Zetec. Coil pack from Mondeo. Need to order a trigger wheel off triggerwheels.com.
This si where my knowledge grinds to a halt!! Havent started fitting it yet. Bike carbs might be ready next week so will probs fit them at same time
now (so i only have to fit throttle sensor once).

Won't cost much more to buy a complete 1800 Zetec --pocket money prices

Hi Darren, will Deneos manifold fit stright onto a set of R1 carbs?
Also the megajolt-mgb unit looks good, did you buy it with loom as well ?
Without loom does it come with the connecters onto the megajolt box?

Is megasquirt not for injection systems?
I understand that I will have to mod the ignition part of the premier loom a bit but is it a complete no no ? If so what loom should I be looking at.

Yes i got the full loom as well. It has the crank sensor and coil pack plugs wired in and a TPS pre-wired.
Deneo will be able to make a manifold to suit any carb / engine configuration including throttle bodies. He does it for a hobby so patience required -
its not his primary business. He has just done a throttle body manifold, now on with my carb manifold. If all goes well pics will be posted soon then
he can assess demand and work out prices.
He can also make the required oil catch tank along with ali headers and fuel tanks. As i say cars are just his hobby but he does such a good job of
them.

I am guessing you just bought the loom and not the loom + aux pack (coil pack and vr sensor). Do the plugs on the loom pack fit any coil pack and vr
sensor?

I got the ECU and loom off Zilspeed who no longer needed it.
I presume the plugs fit any of the Ford sourced EDIS bits. They certainly fit on my sourced bits from no particular donor.

Down to the scrappy for coil pack and vr sensor then.
Unless anyone else out there has a cheap one going

Sorry tried to post this earlier but internet is being an arse!
Here we go (forget about the magsquirt lark for now as you can't use it with bike carbs and it sounds like thats what you want):
1) not a zetec part. Found in lots of escorts. Look for a electronic ignition ford (most) but if possible not an injection one. Fiesta's
often have them but beware as some of them are different for MAP. Have seen one in an old mondeo I think aswell. Coil packs come from either Fiesta
(bugger, right behind the down pipe), escort, or mondeo - some escorts have a funny one which still works but has two terminals rasied above the
other. VR sensor comes from Fiesta the easiest (Torx bit) remember to take the plug and lots of the wire as its shielded cable. TPS you don't
need if its for R1's (see below) but if not ford escort pre-zetec (getting hard to find now....not CVH one) If you can't be bothered to
scrabble around the scrapyards or can't find what you need; I often sell all of these bits on ebay. They go for £50 including free postage from
me. Though if you need some I could put together a locost deal if you u2u me.....If its not answered all your questions U2U me and I'll sort
you out.
2) As said MAP is manifold pressure so engine load, TPS is just a variable resistor. MAP is 'better' because it sense's engine load
not driver input - but bike carbs and webbers etc produce pulses in the manifold as valves open and close etc. Its perfectly possible to use MAP with
bike carbs though it take some work....talk to Paul F on here about making a CO2 bulb for use with MAP. TPS is easier and R1 carbs usually come with
a TPS fitted which will work with megajolt.
3)Yes megajolt is 3d if used with a TPS or MAP aswell as VR sensor. You can indeed use it in a 2D mode by setting it up in the control panel. Works
just likely an amazingly well set up dizzy!
4)As mentioned R1's usually have a TPS attached so no worries there.
5)No affraid no refference...though I've done it a few times now and don't mind answering questions so feel free to u2u me.
6)Premier wiring loom will be fine. you need to make your own loom to connect all the megajolt together but its super easy. Check out the picasso
site for a nice circuit diagram. (type megajolt into google)
Good luck...you wont be disappointed! Oli.

Oh yes and megasquirt is injection and ignition, megajolt is just ignition. Ie. Megasquirt not for carbs have to pay lots more and get injectors and
other bits eg new tank, fuel pump, hi-pressure fuel pump, swirl pot etc etc etc. Megajolt can be used with any carb setup including webbers and bike
carbs etc....Oli.

The megajolt web site http://picasso.org/mjlj/ is a good place to start for set up info , it may take a while to find and understand the relevant info
but it is all available on there.
I have used a MAP sensor with both a downdraught carb and now throttle bodys on my car using a vacuum damper as mentioned. The R1 carbs will have a
TPS that will work fine , i have also used a bosch one from a vauxhall, these are easy to fit.
The premier loom will provide the 12v supply to the coilpack and module, but you will need to connect your own VR sensor and coilpack plus megajolt
signal connections, and will also have the chance to fit shift lights etc if required.
