Dwell angle

How do you dynamically measure dwell angle on a points based dizzy?
I've seen plenty of multimeters around with dwell on them, but what's it actually measuring?
I've got a couple of multimeters (including PC based) and am reluctant to buy another just for this feature.

I think it measures how long there is a circuit for - i.e. if dwell angle is 20 degrees, points will be closed for 20 out of 360 degrees.

Maplins do an automotive multi meter with dwell on it.

Quite correct.

It is a more accurate way of setting the points gap.

Rather than spend money on a meter to measure this, I would put it towards some sort of electronic ignition which does away with the points.

I use the Aldon Ignitor approx £65 - replaces points, dead easy to set up, sits under dizzy cap.

There may be cheaper ones but I am not sure where to look

the multimeters that measure dwell do so by averaging the voltage across the points e.g. If the points are closed all the time, you would see 12 V, if closed for halfthe time then 6 V and open then 0v.

I think you need to multiply the figure you stated by by the number of cylinders to get the right numnber (or t hen again maybe not, too hot to thing at the mo'
