Tips / suggestions for engine wiring 2005 R1

Right guys. We can not postpone wiring the engine of our car any longer. This is the bit that we feared most, so any good tips, suggestions are most welcome, ie: how to start, what to leave last, what to do, what not to do...

We have the engine in place, cooling fully plumbed, fuelling fully plumbed. We also have the MNR car loom in place and we have the original R1 loom with us.

I have removed most of the insulating tape from the R1 loom to make it easier to identify wires / modifiy them for length, etc.
I have also identified all connectors on the loom and on the engine, stuck small labels on all of them.
So now what? Plug all connectors on the engine into their respective R1 loom counterparts? Then modify some of the bike switches (clutch, engine kill, kick-stand, lean angle), then what? Cut off other plugs / wires? Connect battery and hope for a start???
Also, we have a PowerCommander, too. Should we incorporate it now or have the engine running first and then add the PowerCommander?

It probably is simple once done, but I am not confident with wiring, so would appreciate any help, pointers.
Thanks guys!

P.S. I have read the suggested links on here (The Fury R1 build page and chockymonster's blog)...

Right,

The wiring all depends on the type of loom and ecu you have.

If you have a UK loom & ecu you will need the ignition barrel and key for the immobilisor.
If not you will need the USA loom and ecu.

Thick White Connector: Ignition
Brown/Blue
Solid Red On/Off

Red Connector (If USA)
Blue/Yellow
Blue/Black Join

Blue 6 Pin Connector
Red/White Run Switch
Red/Black Join

Black Starter Switch
Black/White Momentary Join

Blue Connector
Blue Black Side Stand Switch
Black Join

White 10 Pin Connector
Black/Yellow Dot Join (Clutch switch)
Blue/Yellow

Make sure you have the tilt switch the right way up. It latches so if if's not the right way up you'll have to switch ignition of and try again. You can replace this with a 470ohm resistor. Can't remember the wires off the top of my head for that but can look them up if needed. (Think it's blue to yellow/green)

You can leave the exup valve disconnected without problems but you will get an error code on the dash if you have that.

To bypass the fuel level gauge light but on a 470 ohm resistor on the green/white & black 2 pin connector for the fuel pump.

Fit the fuel pump using a relay to the black & reb/blue 2 pin connector for the fuel pump.

I'd get it all running beofre adding the powercommander in. never had a problem with one but it's another thing to complicate matters when first starting.

I cut off all unused connectors to keep things simple later on.

Any issues drop me an email.

Keith

First I'd have a good read through this. My electrics would have taken a lot longer without it....

http://www.robcollingridge.com/kitcar/design/engine/electrics.html

Have you got the wiring diagram? Get it printed out at least A3 size.

I got mine running then removed all the stuff I didn't want (lighting). I kept re-starting it after every few bits I'd removed; that way if you've disconnected something you shouldn't have you know what to check (the last bit you did). Then I set about lengthening the bits that needed it and re-starting as I went, as before.

Try to release the terminals from thier connector blocks rather than cutting. That way they can go back if needed and you don't have to tape up all the ends. They have a little tag that you can release; Once you get the knack its easy!

It's a time consuming job but easier than I expected. Starting the engine is always fun as well!

With 2006 5vy in my MNR i have the MNR loom for the lighting, and the R1 loom for the engine. firstly i plugged in all the R1 stuff, and made sure it fired up, then i removed all the wiring for lighting from the R1 loom once i knew everything was ok.

The wiring diagram in the back of the R1 service manual is great for tracing all the wires

adithorp - I did my BEC exactly the same way. Make sure it runs first off, then start removing/adding wires. Only once in this process did I have an issue, and it took me minutes to trace the fault.

Think about one circuit at a time - if you try to tackle the entire job in one go, then your brain will melt (fact). I found it quite enjoyable once you get stuck in - and now I know my wiring loom like the back of my hand!

Thanks guys for the help! I am feeling more confident already...
The one thing I can't imagine now is how to wire in the battery? Both the Yamaha and the MNR loom have battery leads, should I plumb in both?
Thanks!
