As per the title really, has anyone got any experience of bringing a car in from Japan and any websites/sources that can be trusted?
I've owned a Jap import MX5 before, so know the deal on installing a fog light and changing the speedo etc, but don't know about paperwork
and processes (I assume it's something similar to SVA/IVA?).
Once I've sold my Indy (coming to a For Sae section near you soon), I'm thinking of a cheap MX5 as a trackday/fun car while I go Kart
racing.
imports is exactly what S/IVA was really created for, kit cars and imports
dont quote me on this, but dont you need a license to import from japan?
alot of people ive known that have had imports have been imported by companies.
With the exchange rate as it is its probably as cheap to buy one from here at the moment.
You didn't need a licence to import from Japan when i imported my skyline, a gmc dayvan and my Granvia.
Try Japautoagents. (where my granvia came from)
Isibike (my skyline)
Or this lot i've never tried

Be aware some Japanese models will run into emmisions problems at IVA, however Mx5/Miata should be OK.
I looked into bringing my Honda NC30 back from Japan and it would have been £600 freight. I don't know what it would have cost for a car or what
the paperwork from the english side would have involved but they won't let you leave Japan with the no. plates on and u had to have owned the
vehicle for at least six-month in Japan first.
If you've got to go through IVA I can't see that it'd be worth it unless the car was nearly new or a spec that you can't get
here.
I was A Director of an import car specialist, U Save Automotive, we were a division of a Japanese comapny. We used to import both cars and parts. It's best if you use a buyer in Japan, try Nichibo Trading.
I brought in a Eunos Roadster/MX5 about 4 years ago. It was reasonably straight forward then - the most difficult bit being at this end when it came
off the boat. Arrange a good 3rd party to be there to meet the car, pay fees on your behalf etc.. and you should have no problems.
Good Luck!
