Our local council put up an incorrect road sign outside our house. I told the guys who were doing the work at the time that it was wrong and yet they
carried on regardless. The correct location borders our property on another side and there.
I could unbolt the sign from the post and install it in the correct place, but should I and is it legal. I can see it now a plod will walk by as
I'm unbolting it and then I'm not moving it I'm stealing it aren't I.
Its pissing me off because we have a lot of stuff delivered by courier and virtually all of them are "unable to locate you property" because
of this.
not sure on the legal side, but if you email them explaining your situation and that youll will be moving your sign in x days etc, keep a copy etc.
What kind of sign is it?
Its a road name sign

To be done for theft you have to "dishonestly appropriate property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of
it".
Which isn't what you're thinking of doing
Weirdly, I remember a newspaper story a few years ago where someone had shifted a lamp post from outside their bedroom window to a bit further down
the street, the council spokesman said that as long as it was wired correctly, they wouldn't take any action
If you can do it properly then just do it.
But make sure you do it in the middle of the day, and have make sure you have some indisputable evidence for where it should be with you. You could
mention what you are going to do to your neighbours first just to check they are happy.
If anyone asks then just tell them what you are doing, and why.
good I'll email the council and inform them of when I am going to do it. I can easily prove where its supposed to be too.
Thanks for the advice
Is the road the sign is on the right name for that road ?

go for it. its in the wrong place, make sure you cover yourself by having some kind of drawing of where its going to, talk to neighbours etc (all as said above) and go for it. if the police happen to drive by and ask what you're up to, tell them straight, say you told the guys putting it up and they did nothing to correct it, so you're sorting it.
I wouldn't E mail the council or let them know. They'll blow a fuse in case you injure yourself and want to blame them or summat and then
for them to admit they got it wrong would be another issue.
Just stick a bin bag over the sign then you can't be done for nowt.
I can top that. Just down the road from me (we don't have any road sign at all) there is a turn off that has two different signs, one on either
side of the road facing one another.
Personally I wouldn't touch the road sign - you're not necessarily committing any offence of dishonesty but you could legitimately be arrested for criminal damage (which doesn't have to be major damage nor permanent)
Wear a visi-vest and hard hat, and maybe get a few cones around the area, and no policeman or passing council employee will bat an eyelid.

aye, for added realism you could get two similarly clad friends to sit doing nothing whilst you graft, or maybe drink tea.![]()

Get some black paint and wipe it out. Otherwise send the council a letter (special delivery) stating that if you incur any more costs due to incorrect signage you'll be sending them the bill. That is if you don't fancy moving it yourself
