Another Hurdle to overcome
omega0684 - 9/3/10 at 05:56 PM

evening all,

on sunday i have to drill out my drain plug on my diff in order to top it up oil after examination. went to my bolt supplier today and he doesn't stock them! and its not worth him ordering one in. (as i only need one)

so i grovel at the mercy of the Locost Forum, can anyone get hold of or know someone that can get hold of an M20 x 1.5 (super fine pitch) bolt approx 25mm in length?

Alex

Not exactly locost but is THIS any good?

Don't mess about - get a replacement backplate and either remove the existing plug or get a new one from these people.

I got my backplate from the kind lads at MK for a few quid, and the plug was about £4. Gives you chance to check the condition of the crownwheel teeth too, if you're sad like me.

And....while you're at it, you could extend the length of the breather, to stop diff oil coating the underside of your floor!

Might need to disconnect one of the flexy fuel hoses, which I found were in the way of my wrench, but at least done=done.

You don't need a replacement pipe just a length of fine bore tubing that will fit snuggly over the end of the breather pipe and not collapse under a bit of vacuum. I used a bit of narrow bore clear syphon tubing from B+Q (about 50p a metre)....

BenB - 9/3/10 at 06:38 PM

Unless you breather pipe has snapped off in which case you obviously do

Worth installing a longer pipe, my diff was venting oil mist out of the breather meaning it ran out of oil. then again it was superlightweight stuff, heavier jollop would probably have been okay.

^^^What Ben said, but I got some tubing with an O/D to fit the hole in the backplate (which didn't already have the stub of breather hose).

halford do sump plugs.

that stainlesss one looks nice but I'd be less than happy with it due to the small allen key to undo it - rather have a big F.O. bolt head to grab.

Alex,

You could always do what i did.....

Don't think it will be here by sunday tho

I forgot that I still have the spare one from MK's backplate. It's not perfect, having been removed with a stilson / mole grips, but the thread's intact and you could weld a nut to the top to insert / extract it for topups.

Assuming std 1st-class post is okay, I'd be happy to post it to you?

Francis.
