Megajolt flies!

Well almost!

Just been reading the latest mag from the Light Aero Association (used to be known as the Popular Flying Association) - they support home-built and owner-maintained aircraft (those on a 'Permit to Fly' (a bit like Locost aircraft).

There's an interesting article from a guy who is building a megajolt ignition system for his Lycoming engined aircraft, and subject to satisfactory testing, he'll be certified to fly with it. Planes have dual ignition systems so that should one fail there's another to keep it running. On these light aircraft, it's almost always 2 magnetos(WW1 technology!) complete with points, condensers and all of those old school things. His plan is to have a magneto backup but use a mapped megajolt system triggered by a disc on the prop hub as the primary source of the spark with an expected 15% efficiency gain in efficiency. He is full of praise for megajolt.
