Plumbing options - gauging interest

Hi Guys,

Recently been trying to purchase (for anything like sensible money) some 25mm & 32mm bends with beads in aluminium, can't find anyone that offers anything customisable to your own requirements eg 6" straight, 90 degree bend, 18" straight or further bends etc

One, am I missing something which is already available, two I am looking at bending & beading machinery & although dear it's not tooooo stupid, so if i was able to offer a service for customisable aluminium tubes (much as I do with the brake & clutch hoses) is there a market ie would you be likely to buy from me? If so in 32mm or 25mm??

Any feedback much appreciated

Thanx Russ

Now that would be good
Yes 32mm and 25mm and what about smaller for heater hose ?

Hi Russ

32mm would be perfect for the zetec water rail among other fitments, would save all the joins and bends in the run to the rad/water pump.

I would say its a goer.

25mm works for busa cooling system

I could definitely use a few custom bits in 32mm for my Mx5 conversion - the cost could be offset against the silicon bends I wouldnt need to buy .

Can you also do welding? As I need a T-piece that seems very tricky to source!

i think its a great idea. 32mm (car engines) 25mm (bike engines) and possibly 12 or 16mm for header tanks/heater matrix would cover most kitcars. Must be worth £10 a bend/peice if its mandrel bent and beaded

Can't weld ali at present, correct me if I'm wrong & not wanting to go off topic, I think I need AC tig for that? I've just been loaned a decent tig set but it's only DC, so I don't think it's any good for ali?

While I think there's a market for specials, Merlin sell a bunch of 'standard' sizes which kind of sets your top price.
Don't know what you were thinking of charging and what your break even would look like.
I'll certainly be interested when I start building again.

Gav, Im sure you know all about bending - is it right that Eddie helps you out???

I might let you be a trial install at a special price if I go ahead!!

I hadn't found the Merlin ones, prices aren't that horrific & they are a bit more versatile than, for instance, the CBS ones, but I'm sure I could do a bit better than that pricewise with the beauty of being able to offer different leg lengths etc. It's all very well buying a leg length longer than you need, but if you then cut it down, you have the problem of not having a bead, & yes I know you can bung a few pop rivets in to make a bit of a bead to hold the hose on, but it's a bit of a bodge!

What is the most common heater hose size? I would guess at 5/8 or 16mm?

Just found out that as far as I can see the lowest P & P option with Merlin is £7.50, so by the time you've got VAT & postage your £16 tube has turned into nearly £30 - perhaps not such a bargain if you only wanted one tube!!!
