Caught speeding but mad - Rant warning
Ivan - 13/11/11 at 03:41 PM

Just received fine for speeding in construction zone - fair cop but makes me mad because it was on a the weekend on a 4 lane national road with clear visibility and no construction activities or obstructions and very little traffic. I was also travelling at 10 kph less than the normal speed for that area and at the surrounding traffic speed - I feel this is purely a money making scheme but fortunately fine is low enough not to matter ( R150 or 12 pounds) , just annoy and make me feel F them and their stupid speed limits.

Rant away....

You need to work on your rant, that one would only score a 'three' I'm afraid.

12 pounds fine!! haha.. Good job it was not over here mate. It would of cost you a good 60 quid fine plus a few points. Then you would have a case for a good-old-rant-and-rave

Hello Ivan its Ivan....

Theres an even harsher road safety camera scheme in the UK - none of which contributes to anything other than revenue generation, pleased to see its alive and well in SA too...

I feel slightly less depressed.

Having said that,

Has anybody here EVER got a fine (or seen someone else get a fine) from the Average Speed Cameras? I'm convinced that they just don't work. Although not in any rush to test this theory out.

The average speed camera's DO work, but they do seem to slow the majority of traffic down, so the revenue from them is very low. There was a set up a few year ago near me and in the 4 months they were up they only caught a handful of people, but they did catch them.

They've just set up a system here in SA on the road between Beaufort West and Aberdeen (A road I regularly travel at fair speed but no more ) and have caught some averaging up to 189 kph on a 120 kph limit over 78 km stretch - they got a couple of days in jail to cool off.

Many fines have been issued so far but none that I am aware of have been tested in court.

Unfortunately I don't think it will help the high death toll on that road as most deaths seem to be on the straight at night or early morning involving minibus taxis, trucks and buses where I believe that roadworthiness and driver fatigue are more a factor than speed as most are head on collisions or vehicle leaving the road. You normally pass about five vehicles coming the other way per hour so hardly heavy traffic and road reserve is well fenced with a risk of hitting a Kudu at night which is why I never drive those roads at night.

I know that even during the day I will now struggle to stay awake on this stretch at the 120 kph speed limit as it is mainly straight and level with looong sight lines and not much to look at.

Ditto my thoughts - we all know someone caught out with hidden cameras, but average speed ones ?

Errr not me. They are privately owned setups, the prosecutions if there are any must also be private IE they cost money

Sure someone more cleverer than me will correct my reply - waiting....

Indeed I've got to send mine off for a fine and 5 year's insurance jack (otherwise known as SP30) on a similarly empty road. I'll be honest at the time I thought I was under the limit
