BMW issues.

Grrrrrr....

so i have a e60 5 series BMW. I love the car but ive been bragging about the lack of repair work its needed for the last few years.

Since i bought it on 70k miles i have replaced a few bushes and wishbones but nothing serious gone wrong.... till now...... ive now just passed the 200,000 mile mark.

SO stuff that needs doing.

My dual mass flywheel has started grinding alot so that needs doing. £200 in parts
My clutch is still the original so that should be done when the box is off £200 in parts
£150 labour ish....

Now when im on the motorway in anything after 4th gear i cant go about 3000 rpms its like im not accellerating at all after 3000 rpms.

only in 4th, 5th n 6th gear though.

it will rev right through in 3rd upto like 70mph if needed.

I dont know how long its been like that as i dont hammer the car but notice when i needed to overtake a stack of lorries.....

so my thoughts are
MAF sensor
CAT
DPF filter

Air filter is new last year but ill check that today.


ANY other thoughts?

sounds like the cat, i had same issue and it was the cat

I've just replaced my dual mass fly wheel after 130k.

It went down hill quickly (like over a single week) and when one of those goes pop, it's going to do some damage.

Mines loses power and won't accelerate, but not all the time, it just seems to have absolutely no go, then other days it flies???

The sluggishness doesn't happen to correspond to having had pie and chips the night before does it Big Boy?

Could it be the tcs kicking in from the clutch slipping? Sounds doubtful to me but fix the dmf and see then...

If you've had a 130k out of it sounds like youve had your moneys worth - with that repair list/bill id be minded to sell it for spares and repairs and find somthing new.

I've actually done 200293 miles out of it.

To be honest I could shift it but I couldn't afford another bimmer that's all.

Is it a 530d? If it is, it is definatley the DPF. For some reason they locate it after the cat on the 530, so it doesnt get the super hot exhaust gasses required for its self clean. Normal symptoms are the car runs fine until it hits 80 degrees ish, then throws a fault. The fault is too much pressure between the turbo and the DPF, so the ecu effectively shuts your turbo down from creating boost. Common on 530d's hence so many companies offering its removal and required ecu reflash.

If its not a 530d, then ignore all of the above and wait for someone who knows what they're on about!!

lack of power?? have you ever changed the crankcase breather assembly.should be a service item think you have to buy mod unit assembly. very common to get over missed.

It's the 525d but the dpf is locate in same place.

I'll check about crankcase breather thing. Not sure if it's been done.

Blimey, that makes me feel better. I have a E60 530 D with 68k on it. I have just done a service last weekend and changed the crank case breather. It was about £60 from BMW. Euro car parts didnt do it. I have heard of all sorts of problems being caused buy not replacing it. It was only 4 bolts on the top of the engine but you have to remove the air filter which takes longer than changing the breather. I also removed the swirl flaps, do you still have yours?

Have you had to replace the turbo yet? i though they normally went pop by about 120k. Not replacing the breather at 70k is supposedly the best way to kill your turbo as oil pressure builds and blows the turbo oil seals.

Out if interest what bushes have you replaced. I think some of my rears could do with changing as i do put it through its paces.

Not done turbo yet nor clutch.

Bushes have been the anti roll bar.

The breather I will do when I pull the fiter off.

I've changed the wheel bearings on both fronts at about £40 a side from a-z in Wakefield

Wishbones of lower front and rear of front is the worst they have been replaced but only £40 a piece.

The car has done 200k so I'm happy with what it's cost.

I'm going to get the dpf filter removed and the cat. Then remapped to get it mot passable and stop the dpf light showing.

Clutch and flywheel I'm gonna do myself I think. But all the above is gonna cost 1k

WTH is a crankcase breather? I'd have thought air could get in and out through the dipstick and oil filler.. I persume it does more

its also an oil catch, the original ones are foam filled, get blocked and prevent the crank from breathing. BMW dip sticks are actually fairly difficult to pull. The new breather is a vortex design which doesnt block. I amazed that you havent had to replace yours.
