Any one got one any good / Thinking about a 2.0 Diesel
what like are they like in the 100k to 200k miles range. Any major problems?
My Dad had one, a 2 litre Diesel on a 52 plate that was less than a year old when he bought it for half what a new one would cost. It was a great car,
one of the most comfortable cars you can buy and you could get alot of stuff in it.
It wasn't perfect though. It went through tyres fairly quickly (But my dad was doing alot of miles at the time, more than 100 a day on an average
day.) and at one point it went crazy and started shouting in Spanish. He owned the car for about three years which is a long time for him to keep a
car and he'd have another one but he is a citroen fan and a fan of larger cars.
I can't help you on what to check on one but I'd reccomend trying one out as they drive like nothing else, my Sister hated the way it felt
to drive so make sure you have a decent test drive.
My wife runs a C5 2ltr petrol auto, 02 reg, had it for over five years, everything electric. The only thing that she moans about is the fact it doesn't have a rear screen wiper. Apart from that its been fairly trouble free, 32+ MPG, (I can get it to do 40 plus), but she does drive like she stole it, :-). HTH Ray
Just wait until you need to change the O/S headlight bulb! Lovely car to drive though
Wifes family have had a few as taxis... they are generally cheap for a reason.
Electrical faults a plenty. Citreon have the worst reliabilty of the 3 french makes. The C5 seemed particularly bad compared to :
Peugoet 406
Citroen Picasso (best of the bunch - not too many electrical items)
Peugoet 807 - Lasted 3 weeks before it got sent back to dealer.
Peugoet 407 (broken spaceship) - so many electrical things that dont work after 4 years/100k miles. Very similar to the C5.
Also Neighbours C5 has been back to the dealer so many times they've lost count.
They are ridiculously hard to work on as nothing is accessable, got so bored of replacing their headlight bulbs on the C5 !!!
Sorry, but wouldnt touch it with a barge pole!!!

Ray, how you can say its not true is rubbish.
It's well documented, it's also personal experience of many french vehicles of friends, family and neighbours.
My father had a 407 for 3 years, after it's 3rd year it started to detiorate with warnings flashing up continuously.
My mother in law had a c5, terrible worst car shes ever owed. 3 years old 60k
She also had a 807 as said didn't last 3 weeks before it went back. 4 yrs 80k
She also had the Picasso which she loved driving, digital dash display finally lost its mind and stopped working.
Wife had the 406 diesel, stop solenoid on pump went, both rear windows stopped working. Air bag light came on due to bad connections. Oh and ABS
stopped working due to the wiring.
So I think I have had plenty experience of french cars, they were all low mileage quality cars when bought before you say otherwise.
The french use cheap electrical components to keep the price down which is fine for its warranty period but not much good after that.
There's even a thread running the same time as this with a Renault scenic loosing it's dash display.
Oh and the renault laguna she's just got rid of (scrapped), that thing drove her mad because of all the faults which meant it beeped at you
pretty much constantly.

I think the rule I was told with french cars is "never buy one that's built on a monday or a friday"
From experience and reading around they're either great or poo
We've had two modernish VWs - golf and Passat - both company cars bought from new and dealer serviced, and three modernish PSA cars - C8, Xsara
and 406 - all secondhand.
There were the faults we had with both makes
Drivers side window fell into door - Golf
Drivers side window fell into door again - Golf
Drivers side window fell into door - Passat
Aircon vented water into car filling footwells with water - Passat
Dash lights went dimmer / brighter randomly - Pasat
Door trim peeled off - Passat
Numerous bits of interior trim fell off Golf and Passat
Washers got blocked - C8
Radiator leaked and needed replacing - Xsara
Suffice to say I would never spend my own money on a VW. I'd happily have a Citroen

Ben seems that you, (family), never stop buying the same sort of cars that continually break down, one wonders why? I would be interested in what they
own now, and how many times they have proved unservicable, for whatever reason? I can only go on my own experience the ones we have, and do, own have
proved to be better than some British cars that we have owned. If you add the three car ownerships together, thats 16 years, (AX was five years),
apart from the normal items, Tyres, Wiper blades, Cam belt change etc. the C5 has only had an exhaust, (so would any other car), Xsara has had a new
rear window electric motor, and a set of front shocks, (due in part to the shite condition of the roads round here), and an exhaust, so I definately
can't complain at these repairs, maybe we have just been lucky, (that makes a change,
) Regards Ray

It's very pretty (IMHO)!
