anyone owned/driven one of these. i have heard good reports about the car but a few problems with the early v6 tdi's!
when did the v6 tdi undergo the upgrades to better cams etc? i have found a 2002 with 74k miles and was thinking of going for a look? cheers
Drove one when they first came out, a 2.5tdi Elegance.
Lovely and smooth, as you would hope. Not sure that the V6 actually makes a whole load of sense though.
Doesn't make that much more power, usese a noticeably bigger amount of fuel.
If I were having a V6 car, it would have to be a 3.0 I think, with Quattro.
I know, no such Skoda, but you know what I mean.
Having owned a B5 in Audi A4 form and a B5.5, only in passat form, I'm a fan and always have been.
Don't look for excitment.
Do look for the feeling of something that gives you the impression it'll look after you come hell or high water
I now have another Passat, a B6 2.0 tdi 140 with DSG, which I love to bits.
The day I bought it I actually went to buy a Superb 2.0 tdi Elegance, had it not been sold, I would certainly have bought it.
I'm a fan - it probably shows.
thanks. i did put a thread up the other day about vag diesel engines. i ideally would prefer a 1.9 pd motor but they are generally higher mileages,
and way more expensive to buy. but are better on fuel and cheaper to fix if anything happens.
anyone have any info on the volvo v70 d5 diesel. with 2.4 volvo motor?
IMO the 1.9pd has had its day. A common rail engine is in a different league in all aspects. I currently drive a Octavia vRS CR having driven the PD vRS version for three years previously. There are a lot more refined diesels out there

I drive a CR 170 Octavia VRs too - epic car!
My brother-in-law, who was a traffic policeman, had the PD VRs as a 'squad car' and loved it -said the only car to come close was a 330d!
However, when he 'upgraded' to a Superb (not the current shape) he hated it and said he couldn't believe that the 2 came from the same
factory!
D5 engine is a peach, quick when pushed, enough torque to tow anything, will give 45-50 mpg too.
My v70 d5 currently on 160,000 and sounding sweet.
Great advice nick. I do around 4.5 to 5k a year. And intend on running for 2 to 3 years before selling again. My main concern is reliability. As well as towing ability. I intend on a road trip to southern France again this summer so need it to be dependable
4.5k a year?? A trip to southern france is over half your annual mileage!
A big fan of PD engines here. Yes, even more modern diesels are even better, but you're into diminishing returns. There are far more things to
fix/maintain, they are much more likely to throw up faults/codes/go into limp home mode and will have DPF's etc.
At your mileage I'd be seriously thinking about not ruling out petrols either.
Currently driving a 90hp pre-PD TDi Passat, and once you're up to a cruise, it's quiet, smooth and very pleasant. Will happily sit at 70mph

i do between 4.5 to 5 k per year and usually when i go to france i take my parents car. which is a 2006 1.8 v-tec civic
D5 gets my vote. I had one as a courtesy car some years ago. Got out of my 2.4 petrol V70, into the D5, and boy it felt quick! Plenty around, and the
cars they come in aren't bad either (S40/V50/S60/V70). The added bonus is most have full leather and an awesome stereo

No direct experience of the S60 or V70, but (IMHO and having had a V50) the S40 and V50 are crap. Way over priced, badly put together, very dated and poorly designed. Ford Focus on which they're based is afar better car all round.
