Satnav - Recommendations

Looking at buying a Satnav as we're going to be spending some time touring around down south this year

Can anybody recommend a Satnav under £100

New to me these, so any advice welcome

TomTom every time for me... And under you budget if you go for UK only maps, or on budget if you include Western Europe...

Garmin eTrex Vista HCx!

That's only half-joking. It's the best GPS I have ever had - NEVER faults, will run for 24 hours off AA's if you can't plug it in, and instantly compatible with *cough* downloadable garmin maps, including full UK, Europe, walking trails, maritime maps etc.

I've used proper sat navs and yes they're obviously way more intuitive, easy to operate and have more user features.

The eTrex obviously has a tiny screen and no lane guidance, but it IS waterproof

if you have a smart phone, there may be some options to use that for mapping

I have an old Garmin. Works brilliantly. I tried a much newer TomTom and took it back after a day as it was so slow.

I'm sure other tomtom models are fine though as they sell loads.

My only advice would be buy one with lifetime map updates otherwise it ends up almost as cheap to buy a new unit when the maps are ut of date.

If you've got an iPhone, TomTom is a £50 App for it.

i bought one of these 7 GPS Navigation SIRF Atlas V CE5.0 4GB SpeedCam 600MHz | eBay

it is really good and only £50 ish,other sizes available

TomTom is great.

I have heard that you can hack them and download other maps from internet, so if you were that way inclined you could just get the basic version.

Navigator on Android is free, and does traffic nicely, but personally I like the simplicity and reliability of the TomTom.

Google Navigator on Android - actually being able to seeing a satellite image of where you are and where you are going rather than a map is MUCH more than a just gimmick and makes things so much easier imho - being able to see actual buildings just for example. I have a Tom Tom and a Garmin of various vintages (but with up to date maps) and on my phone (as well as Google Navigator) Co-Pilot and the only one I ever really use now is Navigator

how much?! lol as said, google navigator, including streetview, is free on android!

other than phones, i never really liked tom tom, but they seem to do alright with the numbers they sell (think the physical size put me off in the past, but obviously thats changed now)
i got a garmin nuvi 300T 4 years ago, still going great, but theres newer models with more features now, i'd still go for garmin personally

Have downloaded Navfree for the iphone and have to say i'm quite impressed so far

another vote here for NavFree, used to be a TomTom man but my last couple have been unreliable and their customer service is now absolutley attrocious!

Not sure I you have bothered , but I paid to have the speed cam update and the adverts removed. Only about £3 I think

It even has euro countries to add on for £4 each.

Another + for navfree.. not as fully featured but can't complain as it's free! That reminds me i really should buy the full version for £2.99


One thing I will say about Garmin is that they have excellent customer service. They repaired and returned my Nuvi within 3 days when the battery died (completely dead wouldn't switch on). Very helpful over the phone etc.
