anyone just watched myth busters, propshaft failure??

myth busters just tried out the results of a propshaft failure and weather it would pogo a car or not, well it didnt pogo in a big mussle car just lifted rear about a foot of the ground and bent the prop up into the boot but think it would be a bit more dramatic in a light kitcar! they also added a big pothole to increase the effect but does make you rethink the requirement of propshaft retension device

What about something like a journal bearing that sits just below the prop but obviously large enought to cradle it?

Don't really know how you would keep it lubricated though as I could see the shaft climbing the side of the trough and causing some havoc.

Even something in the basic shape of _/ ? Has this been done before?

Edit: good episode of MB too

Years ago I was following an old style large mercedes van when all of sudden the back end shot up in the air by about 6 foot, I could see the engine in the front of the van!
The propshaft shot out the bottom spinning like crazy got some grip then shot sideways on to the hard shoulder, I wouldn't fancy being anywhere near one when it lets go

Cheers
David

OOooo that's interesting i use to the work at a place that used toyota hilux pickups really good trucks and the throttle didn't stick o n them either haha

anyway either one rear spring broke and the propshaft came out or the prop failed and the spring broke with the force anyway it dug a very large hole in the road and the truck ended up over the edge in a field.

I just want to add, that i dont have any of the above problems!!

ALTHOUGH.... - I did have the CV bolts remove themselves and dent the bottom wishbone a bit.

I had all bolts on both ends of both driveshafts come loose on me - fortunately I found it by chance before something really bad happened.

Not sure how it happened, but now they're all lock wired in.

Even better shape: O
i.e. a chuffin thick steel strap/bar all around the propshaft. Common practice for big power machines in the states. Just google image search the US translation 'driveshaft loop' and have a look. I'm considering some on mine - especially my front prop that has no real protection from the tunnel structure.

Sevens should always have a retaining strap fitted in the prop tunnel.

i think its about 90cm on a cec and about 1.2/1.3 on a bec

do a search for 'prop catcher' on this site - its come up a few times

I think the best way has to be two round steel ones - one near the front and one near the rear

my dax ones only about 2 ft I think (I'd have to measure it though)

I think most of the other ones are longer.....

Rob Did you have to take it out the wrapper to put the tape against it?

^^ it was already out the wrapper (it currently lives behind the sofa in the living room) someone else wanted to know size of the bolts that came with it
