.... funnily enough I was thinking as to why the whole of UK grinds to halt when we have 3 nanometres of snow yet it seemed to tick along quite happily when I were lad, in the last millennium.

.... and it probably has to do with 2 things: cars are not fwd instead of rwd - does that help or hinder?

.... but more importantly the trend for blinging low priofile wide tyres with zero tread tyres as opposed to narrow tyres with open tread.

... not to mention electronic gadetry such as traction control, ABS, GPS, PVC, MTV bladi blah that has in many cases caused the thinking part of motorist's brains to whither away due to lack of use.

Mostly the wide low profile tyres I think. Tyres no longer seem to be suitable for snow (in this country) which is probably understandable as we normally only get a couple of days of snow a year.
In countries with worse snow they don't bother clearing it and force people to use chains and proper winter tyres.

FWD is better on snow and ice, but I suppose people with RWD had to learn to drive in snow or crash.

I suspect another part is cars are now so safe (and advertised as such) that people think that no matter how badly they drive they will be ok so they go far too fast for conditions.

Another thought, cars are now a lot heavier than they used to be (due partly to the safety structures and partly to all the electronics junk cars drag around). On ice the last thing you need is to have to kill (say) 30% more energy when braking (for the same speed)

One of those went passed me sideways in the opposite direction couple of days ago - just gave the driver a grin as he slid by he looked really peed off.

other half has got a little s reg micra with 165 width tyres. its absolutely fine in the snow where as my big vauxhall estate with 245 tyres, traction control esp and every other system on the sun is like Bambi on ice.

was quite fun in the micra driving round all the stuck cars with the fluffy teddy's on the dash and parcel shelf.

tyres are working as designed. Slicks - slipping on ICE. Put on snow tryes and it might just move . it's twats like this that end up blocking roads with the attitude of "I have a 4x4 I can do 90 in the fast lane in Snow AND STOP" (LOL)

having said all that about low profile tyres, my dad uses yokohama a048s, and hes not got stuck yet.
i blame everyone relying on electronics, and automatics.
it is funny though seeing all these '4x4s' getting stuck on slight inclines with a light dusting of slush on them

........and probably knows how to be gentle with his controls () slow down without his brakes because he's left that little known entity in this country called a braking distance.
So much driving is slamming between throttle and brake these days. It took me an hour and a half to do the last 4 miles to get home yesterday and the scariest moment was a girl approaching a T junction backwards in a Ka as i'm driving past. I watched her approach the junction as normal expecting her brakes to stop her! Thankfully the centre island stopped her before another car did

My dads out in his discovery. It appears to be pretty much unstoppable!

It managed to reverse this (well over a tonne):



Up 200m of this (most of which is equally as steep as that video):



Without batting an eyelid.
