oil seal sizes

i need crank oil seals for my new toy and i begrudge paying £27 for a rear main seal when i can prob get the same thing for £1 from a bearing centre,so does anyone know where i can get the seal sizes from before i take the engine out and strip it down?

'Standard' oil seals probably won't be suitable for the surface speeds involved in an engine, so it may be cheap but you could end up doing it again after a short time, sorry.

What do you think that the manufacturers use, something special, not on your life, just standard oil seals. Cheers Ray
